Massage Schools

There are reasons why your biggest problem is staffing massage therapists. First, Massage schools are disappearing.

After peaking at 1600 in 2008 massage schools have steadily declined. In 2022, at the time of the most recent survey massage schools totaled just 872. A 45.5% decline.

Alpha School of Massage began 2025 with 148 active massage students.

In 2024 we graduated 97 Massage Students.

Massage Program Graduates

Losing 50 schools nationwide might not sound like a big problem, but the schools that remain are also producing fewer graduates.

22,183 massage students graduated from 872 approved programs in 2022 putting the average number of graduates at just over 25. That’s up from 22 on the previous survey, but down from the pre-covid survey of 2018.

While the national average for graduates from approved massage programs is 25 per program, 90 massage students graduated from Alpha in 2023.

The MBLEX

The number of students taking the MBLEX continues to decline as well.

Numbers obtained from Alpha’s Annual pass reports. (Calendar year 2024)

As of 6/30/2016, 26,007 students took the MBLEX for the first time. That number has decreased more than 47% as of 2024 with only 13718 students taking the exam as of 12/31/2024.

Something to note; just 70% of students passed the MBLEX on their first try. That’s just 9,554 students passing on their first attempt.
